A Slightly Smaller Black Hole

M found his PE clothes today. In French class. Still no sign of B's T-shirt, so I ordered her a new one.

Do We Have a Black Hole?

Both B and M brought their PE clothes home to be laundered at the beginning of break, two weeks ago. (Or so they say!) We arrived home from our vacation on Saturday night, and I promptly started work on the mountains of laundry that had accumulated. B's sweatshirt and shorts were in the hamper, but no T-shirt, and M's PE clothes were nowhere to be found. He remembers bringing them into the house, in a plastic bag, and I have a vague memory of seeing him bring a plastic bag in (although my memory is not always reliable for stuff like this). Nonetheless, we searched everywhere we could think of yesterday, and no PE clothes were to be found.

Both kids were sent off to school this morning with something to wear for PE (so they don't lose points), and instructions to check the lost and found plus every classroom they went to after PE. (PE clothes are emblazoned with their last names, since everyone at the school has an identical set.)  Once they've looked at school, I guess it's time to order new clothes. And search for the black hole that has taken up residence at our house.

Back to School Shopping, Part 1b

I THOUGHT we were done with the clothes shopping, but no, B waited until yesterday to tell me that her tennis shoes had holes in them. Off to Payless we went today in search of new shoes. I did have the foresight to have M put on his shoes for me before I left: sure enough, they are getting too small, so I had to buy him a pair, too.

B's shoes were easy enough--find a couple of pairs of plain white tennis shoes and try them on. She can wear either girl's or women's sizes right now, so she has plenty to choose from.

M is a little harder. First, he refused to go, so he was informed that he would have to wear whatever I brought home. Second, we had an experience last year when I bought him "skate shoes," and he decided a week later that they were terrible for running, so I had to buy him a second pair of shoes with better soles. Also, despite being a 6th grader, he's not so great at tying his shoes, so I was very happy last year to find a pair of men's shoes at Payless with elastic laces (he has long since outgrown the Lands' End kid's shoes). This year, no such luck. I found him some inexpensive, lightweight, black tennis shoes with an appropriate sole, but he's going to have to start tying his shoelaces.

Too Darn Hot!

I'd like to sup with my baby tonight,
Fulfill the cup with my baby tonight.
But I ain't up to my baby tonight,
'Cause it's too darn hot.

A couple of weeks ago, I put together a group to sing Chris Allen's arrangment of "Too Darn Hot" from Kiss Me, Kate at the House Music concert. Apparently we were just a couple of weeks early. It is a little after 2:00 pm now, and 98°F at my house (80° indoors). Yesterday topped out at just under 100°, according to our wireless thermometer, and I'm curious what today will bring.

I am rethinking what I plan to wear to tonight's concert (see new "Upcoming Concerts" listing -----> ). Generally, when I sing with a group that doesn't have a uniform, I try to err on the side of formal and tasteful. However, long sleeves and a long black skirt are not looking like good choices for tonight. We have been given permission to go sleeveless tonight, but the only sleeveless black tops I own are decidedly on the casual side. (And I don't think a "little black dress" will do, either.) Maybe I'll just bring a wide selection of black clothing and see what the temperature is like inside the church.

Spring Break, Day 3

No, you didn't miss the "Day 2" post: the second day of our trip down here consisted of finding a dress for B, and chauffeuring her to and from a pair of playdates in our old neighborhood.

Today was a little more exciting. Well, B didn't think so, but it's not her blog :-) The family went down to our favorite San Diego mall, Fashion Valley. B made out like a bandit: I bought her some cropped jeans (on clearance), my mom exchanged two shirts she (B) didn't like and let her pick out the replacements, and B was able to buy herself socks (with Dalmations on them) and an Ugly Doll. I tried on a half-dozen pairs of jeans, and was able to determine that none of them fit properly. The ones that fit my hips were too tight in the legs, and the ones that fit my legs were too loose in the hips. If anyone has any great suggestions for places to buy jeans for women in small sizes (that don't charge an arm and a leg), please let me know! (Non-low-rise a plus!)

This evening I tagged along with a friend to a San Diego Master Chorale rehearsal and saw a lot of friends. I picked a good day to visit. SDMC is preparing for the premiere of Daniel Kellogg's Fiery Furnace with the San Diego Symphony, and tonight the composer came to listen to the choir. I got to sit in and sing along--it's a challenging work for the chorus, but I enjoyed listening and singing. I hope I'll be able to hear it with the orchestra someday.
