A collection of unrelated November thoughts:
B is moving up in the ballet world: today she has to stay for the entire six-hour Nutcracker rehearsal, because she dances in both acts. They are running Act I from 12:00-3:00 (3 times), and Act II from 3:00-6:00 (2 times). This year she's a green soldier (featured as one of the two "Milk & Cookies Soldiers" in two shows), and a Russian licorice corps member. They have four casts for eight shows, and B is in Cast A and Cast C this year.
My parents arrived safely yesterday, only a few minutes late. There was some heavy rain which delayed us: B and I barely made it to the airport in time, despite leaving a hour before the flight was supposed to arrive.
The turkey is defrosting in the garage fridge, about half the supplies for dinner have been purchased, and today I bought two extra folding chairs, since we're having some extra guests on Thursday.

Sprinklers & Labels
Another exciting weekend day. DH started work on repairing the sprinkler system today. I was planning to do some stuff in the garden (fertilizing, weeding, etc.). Instead, I spent quite a bit of time bailing out the sump pump, which has stopped working. I still don't know what's wrong with it: I removed the gunk that was preventing the float from moving (two bucketfuls of mud & debris), but the circuit breaker trips whenever I try to activate the pump.
After two trips to the hardware store, DH did get the backyard sprinklers working again, but we're mystified by the front ones. They were all in working order when we turned off the system for the winter. Now, only one of them pops up and waters, so there must be a leak or blockage in the system somewhere. No idea where, and the idea of digging up the entire front yard to find out doesn't appeal to me. I did start digging around the working sprinkler to find out where to go from there, but the clay was too hard to make much progress on.
M is heading to fifth-grade camp this week, so I had to label all of his clothes and gear tonight. I drew the line at labeling socks--if he loses them, I'll just buy some new ones. I did label his underwear, his toothbrush, and his sunscreen (that he'll never remember to put on). He has two new pairs of tennis shoes (two pairs of shoes are required, and he had outgrown the ones he was wearing) and a new pair of flip-flops for the shower. Target had $2.99 flip flops for women, but nothing that cheap for men, so we got a $9.99 pair at Rite-Aid.

Easter Frenzy
My sister came over for Easter dinner last night. We had ham, homemade scalloped potatoes, and some asparagus that I managed to overcook. DH's family (parents, sister, niece & nephew) arrived late last night for a visit. Our house is sparkling clean (yes, even the kids' rooms), but don't look in the garage. Or B's closet.
In addition to the expected cleaning stuff, we had an extra task yesterday. On Saturday, we put Otto out in the yard to enjoy the sunshine. When we went to bring him in that evening, we discovered he had wedged himself under the steps to our deck, so we left him there in hopes that he would come out on his own. No such luck--the weather was hot and sunny yesterday afternoon, and he was still hiding, so DH and I had to drag him out. We took a stick and poked it between the treads of the stairs, to try and push him out, and I crawled under the deck and got hold of a corner of his shell to pull. After much pushing and pulling, we finally got him out. I've closed off his access to that area with an old shelf that was lying around, so hopefully we won't have any repeats!
I originally decided to take a day off from work today so I could join DH's family for their tour of Berkeley. However, there were one too many people to fit in the minivan, so I'm loafing at home today. I think I'll go to the grocery store BEFORE the kids get out of school.
On a completely unrelated topic, DH and I have for the last five years or so entered a March Madness pool run by a friend of ours. We know nothing about basketball: some years we've even let the kids enter and been beaten by them. This year, after the second round, I am leading the pool! I'll enjoy it while it lasts--I'm sure someone will pass me up in subsequent rounds.
